Glove Preparation
Some gloves come pre-oil and ready for use. Unfortunately The
Heart of the Hide from Rawlings do not. In my opinion
they are the best gloves available. They also take the longest
time work in - so you better start in the cold months.
Step 1 - Lubricant - Some like shaving cream - I have had the
best luck with vaseline. But this requires a bit of work. Cover
the inside of the glove with Vaseline. After working the vaseline
into the leather - take a ball (for larger gloves use 2 balls)
and place right where you want the pocket to be formed - wrap
the glove tightly in the position your hand feels most comfortable.
Step 2 - After a week - unwrap the glove and repeat the process
with Dubin this time. Put the glove on and open
and close it about a hundred times - then apply the dubin and
re-wrap.
After about a month the glove
should be formed exactly how you wish. Infielders mits should
be open at the end of the pinky and thumb. For some reason I see
a lot of kids closing this part of the glove. This does two things
- prevents you from picking up tough ground balls and getting
the ball out of your glove. Treat your glove like a baby - it
is yours and if you take care of it, it will take care your defence.
